Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Information

In this section we will share with you the latest information regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Our school will continue to publish updates as and when we receive them from the Government and the DFE.

Welcome back and Happy New Year from everyone at Chantlers.


As I am sure you will have heard, the current Covid pathway is still the one we are following. 

There are no new restrictions or guidance, so we will continue to follow what is set out. 


If your child has any symptoms of being unwell, please do not send them into school until they are well and have a negative test, otherwise, you are weakening their immune system, which stops them fighting any other bugs or viruses. If they haven’t had Covid, they are more likely to get it. As we have found some of the children have now contracted it twice.


Any child being off school is not what anybody wants but sadly at this time we need to protect as many children, parents, their families and our staff as best we can. 

Please can you continue to wear a mask when on the school grounds?


I don’t wish to dwell on my Covid experience. Although I have returned to work, I am far from fully recovered. Under my Doctors advice, I have been allowed to return, with altered hours. If you need to see me or talk to me please use my email or arrange an appointment with the office. I hope that the way I feel at present continues to improve and that I am back to full capacity again soon. 


As always you can see any other member of SLT, (Mr Lea, Ms Lucas or Mr Robinson). If it’s a Key Stage 1 issue, please see Mr Hughes as your first point of call. Any Special Educational Needs issues are Miss Hall. All class teachers can help with daily issues.

Easter Holidays - Covid-19

For information:

The Department of Education has issued further guidance:

1.    Where a pupil or staff member tests positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), having developed symptoms more than 48 hours since being in school, the school should not be contacted. Parents and carers should follow contact tracing instructions provided by NHS Test and Trace.

2.    For the first 6 days after teaching ends, if a pupil or staff member tests positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), having developed symptoms within 48 hours of being in school, the school is asked to assist in identifying close contacts and advising self-isolation, as the individual may have been infectious whilst in school.

3.    School staff are not asked to remain on-call or conduct any contact tracing more than 6 days after the final day of teaching. Where a school's last teaching day is on Thursday 1st April, there should be no pupil contact tracing asks beyond Wednesday 7th April.

Therefore, if your child tests positive for COVID 19, between Friday 2/4/21 – Wednesday 7/4//21 please email Mr Barlow on who will be monitoring his emails until the 7th April 2021.

You will need to specify in the email: your child’s name, class, date of birth, your name and contact number, as well as attaching the confirmation of a positive test.

Mr Barlow will need to contact you for further information.

This will mean you will have to self-isolate for ten days and the school will need to try to determine any close contacts that your child has had that could be a potential risk of infection.

Children Returning to School - May/June 2020

Dear Parents,


I hope you all remain safe and well at this time. As you know the Prime Minister announced on Sunday 10th May that he planned for a phased return of children back to school from Monday 1st June at the earliest. He said that in June, the first three year groups that would begin to return to school would be Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. Then in July, he anticipates all pupils having a month in school before the summer holidays. This was conditional to five key tests being achieved by that date. Schools have been asked to carry out comprehensive risk assessments following guidelines issued by the Department of Education (DFE) to see what we need to do to prepare for a safe return for pupils.


You may be aware that Headteachers, Governors and Local Authorities have expressed concern over the clarity of the scientific guidance that determines if 1st June is the right time to begin opening schools. We have not yet been completely satisfied that the evidence presented is robust enough. However, despite this, we are also aware that children do need to return at some point.


Therefore, following our risk assessments, we now have a plan for how to start returning children to school, from June 15th on condition that the five key tests issues by the government have indeed been met and that we can comply with necessary safety requirements.


Our risk assessments have shown that we can only accommodate 9 children per room that the DfE refers to as ‘bubbles’. This would mean that in order for all our pupils to be back, we would need about 31 such ‘bubbles’, each with their own social distancing and hygiene systems in place, also staffed by 1 or 2 colleagues depending on the need. For our school, with the number of children we have, this is impossible to implement while keeping everyone safe.


Therefore, under the current guidelines, senior staff and key governors met yesterday on 3rd June 2020 and we also conducted parental consultations to see what we can actually do to meet the guidelines AND our legal safety obligations for children to return. I devised two plans and by a huge majority the second plan was accepted, please find below the order of when we hope to get things going. This is a transition plan that is highly inclusive giving all our children time back in school, to say, ‘Goodbye’ to their old teacher and have closure in the last year and also a, ‘Hello’ to their new teacher in preparation for September. This plan will also build up your child’s confidence by being back in school in a fun and friendly way, with some great transition and preparation activities ready for a full reopening.


I would also like to thank you all those who replied to the parent survey that went out and for your contributions yesterday at the various phased meetings. It was lovely to see so many of you who attended. Your responses have also helped us to shape our plans especially in relation to planning for the return of our youngest children whilst also maintaining social distancing as much as possible. For those of you who said that you are not ready for your children to return, I would like to stress that I totally understand your reasons. We will keep in touch with you and your child, some form of home learning will still be offered, and you will face no pursuit of penalty for making this decision. However, once you have read the plans if you change your mind that is also perfectly fine.

Plans for new Reception intake pupils to have some time within their new school and to meet their new teachers – Details will follow nearer the time on when and how we support this.

Possible invitation for new intake parents to attend a meeting with teachers and senior colleagues in preparation for September.




Please note that children of Key Workers will still be able to attend as normal as they have done since 23rd March. This will continue until the end of the term in a separate Hub based within Pre-school building so that they are self-contained.


To enable the organisation of hubs and allocation of staff, we need to know exactly which children will be in school on their scheduled week. Parents are requested therefore to book a place on the parent's evening booking system by Tuesday 9th June at 9.00am. Access to the system will be available from 6pm tonight, link as follows:


This is a very complex process, so unfortunately if you don’t book a place by that date, we will be unable to accommodate you due to meeting the staffing and safety requirements of our risk assessment.

You will be able to specify any particular days you require or specific friends your child may wish to be with, by answering the questions asked in the booking process.


We will confirm your place, together with the practical arrangements, for example, school meals, resources, dropping off and picking up next Wednesday 10th June 2020.


Teachers have completed school reports for each child to give you an idea of strengths and areas we might need to pick up on once they return properly in September. Children who have started with us more recently, e.g. since January 2020, will receive a summary letter explaining how well they were settling in.


This plan is a starting point and as time passes we intend to amend it accordingly, I apologise in advance that this will cause many inconveniences for a great many of you especially in relation to work commitments, but we are also very aware that those of you who wish your child to return are putting your trust into our ability to keep them safe. That must be our utmost priority for the coming months, which is why we are treading so very cautiously and carefully.


Should the government change its position on this, we will, of course, update you as soon as possible.


Please can I place on record a big thank you for the lovely emails of support and encouragement I have received, the kind gifts of masks made provided for us all and all the kind donations of sweets, cakes and chocolates you have sent in? They have been gratefully received and demolished.

Dear Parents/Carers


Returning to School - Parents Meeting: 3rd June 2020


I hope you are all safe and well. As you are aware Bury local authority does not support the government’s proposed plan for the reopening of schools in its present form on June 1st.


After giving careful consideration to the practicalities of implementing those proposals, research, and reading the guidance, I have developed an alternative plan that I believe is more practical and complies with many of the required procedures, given the conditions required to keep both staff and children safe.


It is my intention to consult with governors, staff and parents on both options, following which a decision can be made that we all agree is the best way to allow Chantlers children to return to school.


To outline these plans and consider your feedback, I would like to invite you to a meeting on Wednesday 3rd June 2020 at a designated time for your child’s year group.


The meetings will take place in the Hall with 2m gaps, by year group, 30 minutes apart so we can comply with social distancing rules. The meeting schedule is as follows:


9.30am             Pre-school

10.00am           Reception

10.30am           Year 1

11.00am           Year 2

11.30am           Year 3

1.30pm             Year 4

2.00pm             Year 5

2.30pm             Year 6


You do not need to confirm your attendance but I would strongly encourage you to come along, as we are in this together, so that I can gauge your thoughts and opinions before rolling out a plan. For those parents that have children in more than one year group, you only need to attend one meeting.

Dear Parents,


Please be prepared it’s a long letter!


Since I last wrote to you on Monday there have been a number of updates on the Government website. They are not easy to find as they have been uploaded to the ‘Education, training and skills’ section of the site rather than the ‘Coronavirus’ section.


There is a section for parents and carers. I have attached a copy of the new document on their ‘Opening schools and educational settings to more pupils from the 1st June: guidance for parents and carers’. There are a number of links within this document to other guidance and information so you may prefer to read it online. At the bottom of this letter, I have included links to online documents.


I will try to summarise the current position and guidance as I understand it:


Overview of the expectations on school


  • If the 5 key tests set by the government justify change then the government plans to move to Step 2 of their adjustment plan, not before the 1st June. At this step, the government plans to include the phased reopening of primary schools for the education of children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.
  • Schools are asked to continue to provide childcare provision for priority groups (vulnerable children and children of critical workers).
  • It will not be compulsory for children to attend.
  • Children who are considered extremely clinically vulnerable and shielding should not attend. Parents of children who have a health condition that makes them vulnerable and is at higher risk of severe illness from Coronavirus should seek and follow medical advice.


Managing risk and rate of transmission


  • Settings are asked to reduce contact between children and staff as far as possible by children being grouped into small groups and keeping that group away from any other group.
  • Year groups will be split into smaller groups of no more than 15. The number will depend on the size of the classroom. Some of our smaller rooms will have groups of 7. No group is allowed to be greater than 15.
  • We are advised that groups should not be mixed. Children should be in the same small group at all times of each day and different groups should not be mixed.
  • Allocate the same staff to a group and as far as possible these staff should remain the same throughout the day and on all days that the group attend.
  • Ensure children use the same classroom or area throughout the day. Schools are asked to consider seating children at the same desk each day they attend.
  • Thorough cleaning is crucial as always but during this time particularly in the following ways:


  1. In between group use of any shared space e.g. between sittings in the dining room if that is used or between groups attending school.
  2. Frequent cleaning of surfaces that children touch more regularly e.g. toys,

            books, desks, chairs, doors, etc.


  • Continue to ensure frequent and quality hand washing.
  • Ventilate rooms as much as possible.
  • Consider one-way circulation around the building or divide corridors to keep groups apart.
  • Stagger breaks and lunchtimes.
  • Use outdoor space as much as possible for exercise, breaks, and learning.
  • Outdoor equipment should not be used unless it is appropriately cleaned between groups. Wherever possible equipment or toys which are not required should be removed and stored away.
  • Limit sharing of resources, stationery, and home-school items.


Curriculum & school day organisation


  • Consider pupils’ mental health and wellbeing and support pupils so they are ready to learn.
  • Schools should also, at the same time, do their best to support pupils remaining at home continuing with a home learning offer.
  • Schools are asked to provide meals for all children in school and these should be free of charge where pupils meet the free school meal eligibility criteria.


Next Steps


There have been a number of documents released, these are also attached at the bottom of this letter. Updates have been frequent and will continue I am sure.


I am in the process of completing a risk assessment considering updates, advice, and problem-solving teamwork across local schools. I aim to have this completed and ready by Friday 15th May.


However, I can already tell you that I am concerned that we will not be able to offer full-time education to the 136 children in Pre-School, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 complying with the safety expectations in the guidelines. Once the risk assessments are all completed I will be able to better pinpoint the specific challenges and will then seek advice from the Local Authority to help solve the problems.


My understanding of the guidance is that I must prioritise attendance in the following order:


  1. Provide places for priority groups (childcare for vulnerable children and children of critical workers)
  2. Pre-School/ Reception
  3. Year 1
  4. Year 6


We want nothing more than to be able to welcome children back to school, but in reality, this is what we face:


  • There are 136 children alone in Pre-School, Rec, Y1 and Y6. These would need 16 classrooms (of which we have 9) and 16 teachers as a minimum (of which we have 12). Yet, these children alone have 52 siblings. What are families to do with these children?
  • Add to this the 20+ children who would have a parent classed as a key worker.
  • A number of staff classed as ‘vulnerable’ and may not be able to return to work.
  • A number of staff, with children in other schools, may also be without childcare.


The school would be asked to fulfill three functions: childcare for key worker children, education in school for some year groups and support home learning for those not in school. As you can see there simply are not enough staff to do this effectively.

These are just some of the challenges faced before beginning to look at the physical limitations of the school building.

The numbers do not add up and an incredible amount of planning needs to take place before we can even consider reopening the school if we are to ensure social distancing is in place, maintained and your child is safe.


Therefore, I am asking for your help in the following ways:


  • Please do not make plans based on the dates given by the government. These are aspirational and are heavily dependent on the specific challenges that each school faces as well as the scientific evidence stacking up.


  • Give us the time we need to devise a plan based on guidance that we only received yesterday.


  • Do not see a place in school as an ‘entitlement’ for your child, even if you are a key worker, or have children in the year groups listed. The final decision rests with the   Headteachers in individual schools.


  • Please support the decisions that we make, even if they negatively affect your own arrangements.


There is not a single solution to these issues. The guidance is contradictory and each school must find its own path based on the building they are in and the staff available. I want to maintain and protect the excellent relationships we have with our families, so I will be fair, open and transparent at every stage.


I have spoken to many parents over recent days and I want to say a huge thank you for your patience, support and confidence in the Chantlers Team as we work out how we move forward. You have shared your worries and questions and understood that for the majority of these I only know the same amount of information as everyone else.


Revisiting questions asked by parents since Monday


When will we know if ‘Step 2’ is going ahead on the 1st June?


This was an interesting question. All the statements and guidance talk about Step 2 only being applied if the 5 government measures are met. I haven’t yet been able to find a definitive answer to this question. I will keep asking and reading the information provided. I am not sure if the government has announced the next review date. If it is 3 weeks after the last one it will be at the end of May.


Is it definite? Are schools starting to reopen from the 1st June?


No. This is part of the government’s Step 2 and they have made it clear that it will not be before the 1st of June and is dependent on continued positive progress towards the 5 measures. The more we can stay home, stay safe and minimise our risk of spreading the virus the more likely we are to be able to open in June.


Will I have to send my child to school if I am concerned about their safety?


No. The government uses the phrase ‘we strongly encourage’ when talking about attendance but have been clear that there will be no fines for non-attendance. As far as I am concerned this will be your choice as to whether you send your child. We will respect that.


I have a household member with a significant health concern do I have to send my child in?


There is very clear guidance on this in the parent guidance. The answer seems to depend on if the household member is ‘extremely clinically vulnerable’ in which case only if stringent social distancing can be adhered to.


Will the children be all together in their normal class?


No group sizes are not allowed to be more than 15 and will vary by the classroom size being used. Most of ours will be in groups of 8 and therefore will not necessarily be able to be with their friends or class teacher.


Will they be split over a number of classes?


Yes, children will be split into small groups across year groups. They may have a set day in school and will be following their learning pack provided by the class teacher.


If split into smaller groups who will teach them?


Teachers or teaching assistants under the direction of teachers. It will depend on staff availability. Some staff will not be able to return to work yet due to the fact that they are shielding, self-isolation, or displaying symptoms.


Will the kitchen be open to serve dinners?


Yes. We have not yet worked out the logistics of how and where children will eat to comply with social distancing and safety measures. I am hoping we can offer a hot meal option but at this stage, this is not confirmed.


How will you keep 2m between reception and year 1 children when playing?


As you will understand this will be impossible to enforce especially with our youngest children.


How will we safely drop off and pick up children in each year group?


This is going to be a significant challenge if we have to open straight away to all 136 children and continue to run the childcare. If we are able to phase our reopening into smaller numbers or put in place a part-time arrangement we can put a plan in place by limiting which ‘groups’ enter via which gate and door and if needed adjusting start and finish times. This will be clarified once we know.


Will the breakfast club and after school club be reopened when schools begin their phased reopening?


I have given this a lot of thought and the biggest challenge to being able to do this is keeping all the children who attend separated by group and in separate spaces as they are cross-class and cross and year group.  The challenges of cleaning areas used during the day are also considerable. There will be a charge for this service, for all attendees as we would have to cover staff costs and resources. This is an additional service provided but not funded by the school budget.

However, I think the final answer will depend on the outcome of the risk assessment and the plan we put in place to phase our reopening.


Will the summer holiday club go ahead?


The same applies as above as it presents the same issues. There will be a charge for summer club for all attendees as we would have to cover staff costs and resources. This is an additional service provided but not funded by the school budget.


Is it worth doing all this planning if we aren’t sure it will happen?


Yes. At some point (hopefully sooner rather than later if medical science supports the decision) we will begin our phased reopening. I see the work being put into planning, preparation and problem solving as a positive step towards a safe, informed and well-resourced return when we are allowed to.


Will the staff and children have to wear PPE?


The only time adults will definitely wear PPE is whilst supervising a child waiting to be collected if they are displaying symptoms associated with coronavirus. We have plastic gloves and aprons for staff and they are welcome to wear these now in childcare and when we reopen to education. Up to this date, we have not provided face masks but are considering this as part of our risk assessment and particularly for staff supervising pupils with symptoms waiting to be collected. If a pupil or staff member feels more comfortable wearing a face-covering then that is fine. What do you think about reopening to these year groups?


I want our school to reopen. I want our children to be able to return to their classroom, their friends and their education. I want you to be able to return to work. I want to lift the trauma of home education for you. BUT only when it is SAFE to do so.


I want to believe that the government has only made this proposal for step 2 because the science tells them it is right, although I am left concerned by a report yesterday that the Chief Scientific Adviser for the DFE has not assessed the school reopening guidance. Hopefully, this will be done quickly and any updates provided to schools.


I think it is going to be a stressful and anxious time for staff, parents and pupils as we all learn to work, play and interact in this new way. I cannot guarantee that any child will stay 2m away from another, I cannot guarantee they will be in a group with their friends, I cannot guarantee they will be in their own classroom, I cannot guarantee they will be taught by a familiar adult. Every age group presents different challenges. It isn’t the ages selected that worry me particularly but the number of year groups. This doesn’t feel like a phased return going straight to over 136 children attending.

As you can appreciate this is a huge undertaking for us as a school but we are also aware of the concerns that our parents have of returning their children to school at this time. Whilst we will make every effort to make it as safe as we can, the conditions we are required to meet to do so will be very difficult to implement, practically on a day by day basis.  


However, to help us manage this going forward we would like to gauge the feelings of our parents, who are considering keeping their child(ren) at home and who intend to send them back into school at the beginning of June. I will keep you updated as regularly as possible, as I am aware that this has massive implications for you all.


Siblings in classes other than those specified will not be allowed back into school until the time of their phased return.


For Year 6 children, I would like to again reassure you that, we will be holding their ‘Leavers Meal’ and ‘Chantlers Prize-giving Celebration’ as soon as it is safe to do so, even if this is after they have officially left.


In the meantime, please can you let us know your intention by clicking on the Parent Hub message and following the link to complete the short survey. If you don’t complete the survey then I will assume that you are happy for your child(ren) to return to school at their allocated phased return.

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all staying safe and well.

We hope you enjoyed the VE Day celebrations, they were a powerful reminder that we go through difficult times but emerge stronger as a result. Some very emotive memories of the forfeits that those who went before us gave for our freedom and peace. We ‘Thank’ them.

Please remember that your learning challenges are uploaded weekly and if you have any queries please contact your child’s class teacher via the address at the top of the pack. These emails are picked up daily and staff are still working as normal.

We know home learning can be tough, so do as much as you can, alongside your family routines and making fun memories together in these difficult times. Please don’t worry about anything you are not managing to complete.

In line with the Prime Ministers' speech last night, as of yet, nothing has changed for schools. We await further guidance and once it changes from consideration to something more substantial I will let you know, what this will look like and how it will work at Chantlers. As you will appreciate every school is different and therefore all schools will interpret the information to fit in with their context in a different way.

At present schools still only remain open for childcare for essential key workers. This is to stop the spread of the virus and in order to keep staff and key worker children safe. I believe it is still unwise for children to be back in school and your child’s safety is our priority.

We are however planning, organising and considering what school will look like when we reopen. Once I have concrete information, I will let you know.

Update 1st May 2020


Dear Parents and Chantlers Children,

I hope you are all continuing to keep safe and well and looking after each other. As of yet, we do not know when school will be re-opening, but once I have more information on what this will look like, I will inform you.

In the meantime, ‘Thank you’ for engaging with the learning challenges that are set weekly for your children from the staff. We have had some lovely emails, photographs, and messages showing us what you have been up to. This is lovely to see as we have missed you lots.

I know it is not the same, as being in school but we are all working our way through this difficult time and hopefully, we will soon be back in school with our daily routines.

I am immensely proud of our Chantlers community as everyone has embraced the situation with positivity and worked in partnership with us over the last few weeks. Parents have been hugely supportive, the staff has given energy, passion, and dedication to making this new way of learning work. Hopefully, boys and girls, you have all been behaving well at home and continued to embrace your learning. Thank you for that.

I know that you have all been using Parent Hub and the school website to keep up to date. From Easter Eggs to phone calls we are all still here working and available for any support. We are busy planning for the way forward and how to embrace re-opening is crucial to minimise any disruption this time may have caused. We are conscious of the many events, trips, and fun times the summer term holds. We are looking at ways, once it’s safe, to ensure your child finishes their current school year on a positive note with their friends and current teacher, before moving into their new class.

Living in a lockdown can be stressful and we know that many people have faced challenges over this period. You may also be worried about people in your family and not of seen them for a while. Please get in touch via email if you need any support at this time and a member of staff will get in touch with you.

We are still open to children of essential key worker staff and also to students who require specific support during this period. The limited areas in the school that are used are deep cleaned every night to ensure that school is kept infection-free.

I am delighted to inform you that Mrs. Pattison had a baby girl on 30th April 2020, Alice Ellen Pattison weighing 8lbs 14oz. They are both doing really well and are safe and healthy.

Hopefully, next time I write to you, it will be with some positive news of re-opening.

Update - 20th April 2020


Dear Parents and Carers,

On behalf of all the Staff and Governors at Chantlers, I hope that you and your family are all well. We miss you all and you are never far from our thoughts.


I would like to thank each and every one of you for following school advice and for trusting that we are making the right decisions for you, your child/ren, and our staff.

I would also like to reiterate some information and guidance following recent updates in this ever-changing landscape.


Government advice: stay at home and only leave your homes for the following very limited purposes:


  1. Shopping for essential food and medicines
  2. One form of exercise a day (a walk, a run) alone or with members of your household only
  3. For a medical need or to provide care or support for a vulnerable person
  4. Travelling to and from work only if absolutely necessary


School closure: We have had between 4 and 9 children attending school over the past 3 weeks which reflects the government guidance that school is only open to vulnerable children and those of key workers, where there is no alternative childcare available. The advice remains that even if you are a key worker, you should try to organise childcare away from school to help stop the spread of the virus.


Free School Meals: We will continue to send vouchers every two weeks through Edenred, for you to buy food for your child/ren. These do not apply to universal free school meals but only to those who receive them in lieu of family tax credit.


Our expectations for learning at home: Although will continue to upload ideas to our website, there are no expectations from school about what you do or don’t do. These are very unusual and unprecedented times.


Please remember:

  • Our children might be scared at the moment. They see and hear a lot, even when we think they don’t.
  • Their routines and structures are disrupted. They will feel tension and anxiety from the adults around them. It is a completely new situation for us all.
  • Children may expect the weeks ahead to feel like the summer holidays; we know that they will feel very different.
  • They may react to all this by changing their behaviours and showing behaviours you have never seen from them before. This might be difficult for you and your family but it is natural and to be expected.
  • Your child just needs these feelings to be acknowledged and to be reassured that you understand that life is just that bit less predictable at the moment.


Under these circumstances, home learning may well add to this anxiety and stress – for them and for you. In that case, leave it. Your children need to be reassured, comforted, loved and feel secure more than they need to be learning.

So, please don’t argue and fall out about any of the learning ideas we have sent home or offered. Instead, cuddle on the sofa and watch a film. Share a book and talk about it. Bake and cook together. Paint pictures, create and make. Play board games. Do science experiments. Travel the world via Google Maps. Go on virtual tours of museums, art galleries, and zoos. Look at old photos and tell stories about family members, some of whom your children have never met. Write letters to those you cannot visit at the moment. Keep a diary. 


However, for some children, a learning routine may be exactly what they need. They might thrive on structure and routine. They might be bored or anxious about not learning. They might be desperate to feel connected to their classmates or teachers. They might love learning online and fly through tasks. 

Your child might be both of these types of children: most children are! Follow their lead and use your gut instinct. You won’t go far wrong. Don’t worry about their academic progress. All of the above will help them. 


Every child is in the same boat at the moment. They will all be ok. When we get back to school, after celebrating being back together again, we will pick up from where we left off and meet your child’s needs like we always do. That’s our job.


So, use the learning resources – or don’t. Or anything in between. Try to have fun spending time together. Your child’s emotional and mental wellbeing – and yours – is far more important than anything else. How they felt during this time will stay with them for the rest of their lives, far longer than any worksheet or online learning task.

Update 30th March 2020


Dear Parents/Carers,


Firstly, just to let you know Hope Phillips is feeling much better. I hope you and your family are all also keeping safe and healthy.


Teachers are going to be continually providing you with work throughout this time on your class page, so please check it out regularly and if you have any queries please use the email provided. Staff are now on a timetabled rota in school, providing care and support for key worker staff, so they will reply as soon as possible.


If you want to send pictures, e-mails or responses to work to your teacher please feel free to do so.


After Easter, staff will ring to have a chat with your child, touch base and maintain contact, so please keep things so they have lots to tell their teacher.


As we had to cancel Parents Evening, Teachers are busy preparing ‘Assertive Mentoring’ reports that you would have received at that time, these will now be emailed out to you.


For both of these, we will be using the contact details confirmed by yourself on the ‘Student Update Form’, unless you have informed us otherwise of any changes.


As Easter approaches we have set ourselves a massive challenge this week, we are going to attempt to deliver an Easter egg to every child. Staff will deliver them, but in order to comply with all the rules of social distancing, they will ring your bell or knock and leave it at the door. If you are there, please let your child wave at the window. This is a huge task but we want to try to make sure you all receive one. Staff will be on their own and will be complying with all the rules – they won’t be able to chat.


At this strange and unprecedented time, we wish you all 'a Happy Easter and hope you all stay safe and well'.

Update: 26th March 2020


Dear Parents,

First of all let’s please send lots of love to Hope Phillips in Year 3, who is currently very poorly due to having all the symptoms of the virus. ‘Hope we are all thinking of you and sending our love and speedy get well wishes’. I am in touch with Mum daily and will keep you updated.

I don’t know of any other cases at present but from The Chantlers Team, we hope you are keeping well and safe and managing in unprecedented circumstances.


Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time on the email provided. These are being monitored in working hours. Though from tomorrow staff will be operating on a rota basis in school as their safety is also paramount, so you may have to wait for a reply.

The deep clean is now complete though many areas will remain in quarantine and will not be used, in order to protect and keep everyone as safe as we can.

As from 9am tomorrow we can offer childcare to key critical workers only-who have explored all other alternatives and will be using school as a last resort. Not because we don’t want your children but because we firmly believe that the safest place is at home.

Those key workers who were contacted by letter on Friday 20th and will require childcare tomorrow and/or any days next week, please confirm by emailing school at

Update: 25th March 2020


Dear Parents,


As you are aware the school is still officially closed. This is because the school is now undergoing a deep clean.

Public Health England advised this based on keeping everyone SAFE. 


The Local Authority were unable to start this deep clean until after 72 hours had lapsed and since the last person was in the building. As a responsible body they took this precautionary message to reduce contamination. As a result, it began yesterday and is likely to take 2/3 days.


At present, I am sorry, but I have no further information until I’m officially informed myself that this has been completed. 


We currently have no access to school systems at present apart from parent hub and the school website, so please ask that you regularly check these.


As soon as we are allowed in the building we will follow up on anything that is required. 


Once I am informed that it is SAFE to do so, I will officially notify you of the childcare provision we will be providing for key worker staff. 


I realise this is a time of huge pressure for everyone but school is following official advice to reduce the spread of the virus.


Hopefully next time I contact you the deep clean will be complete. 


In the mean time, please follow any advice given by the school website and Local Authority guidelines.

Update 22nd March 2020


Chantlers will not be able to open as planned for childcare provision on Monday 23rd March for children of key workers.


The deep clean that was expected over the weekend has not taken place and is now scheduled for Tuesday.


We are not in a position to open until after the school has been deep cleaned in accordance with national guidelines. We will keep you informed via ParentHub and the website as we receive information.  You will receive notification once we are able to offer child care for key worker parents.

Strict new curbs on life in the UK to tackle the spread of coronavirus have been announced by the prime minister.


People may only leave home to exercise once a day, to travel to and from work where "absolutely necessary", to shop for essential items, and to fulfil any medical or care needs.


Shops selling non-essential goods have been told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together will be prohibited.

The UK death toll has reached 335.


If people do not follow the rules police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a televised statement from Downing Street.

19th March 2020


Dear Parents/Carers




As you will all now be aware, we have been instructed by the government to close the school to almost all children after tomorrow, Friday 20th March 2020.


The decision to close schools is based on scientific evidence as part of social distancing measures put in to reduce the spread of COVID-19, by reducing contact and potential infection in the school setting.


As advised by the government, we will make childcare provision for children of key workers, who may need this optional facility. In accordance with local authority guidelines we have already identified those pupils. For these children, it will not be a normal school day but a basic care facility. Over time, the way that this care is provided may change from a local basis to a different kind of provision within the wider local community, e.g. by another school or local ‘hub’.


All other children will need to stay at home from Monday onwards and observe the national guidance for social distancing. Children should refrain from mixing with other children to reduce the risk of spreading infection.


Continuation of Learning

Although it is impossible to replicate the work the teachers had planned for their classes, they have prepared alternative work provisions for pupils to complete at home. These are accessible on the ‘Class Pages’ section of the school website from Monday. As well as this, please see a copy of our Continuation of Learning Plan.


Staff are contactable by email/via class pages and they will respond to any concerns/issues but this may not be immediately.


Attached is a suggested schedule (helpfully posted on Facebook) of how to structure learning at home, together with our Continuation of Learning Plan.


You can contact the school on for any reason during this period of closure, however you may not get a response immediately. We will continue to keep you informed during the closure and update you with any new information. We have no indication when schools will re-open, but we will let you know by ParentHub and on our website as soon as possible.


In the meantime, look after yourselves and your families in what are very uncertain times.

Dear Parents/Carers,




I am writing to update you on the current situation in school.  The national situation is changing on a daily basis and we are endeavouring to follow the guidance provided. The announcement made by the Prime Minister yesterday afternoon (16th March) has introduced a number of significant changes that impact schools.


The key changes include:

  • Family members of individuals who are displaying symptoms also self-isolate. This means that where one family member displays symptoms, whole families will now need to self-isolate for a period of 14 days.


  • Further social distancing, individuals at risk take measures to self-isolate. The definition of at risk now includes those who are pregnant.


However, the national guidance remains clear in restating the value of schools remaining open and we would ask for your support and perseverance in this very challenging period.

To help manage the risk in school and staffing levels, we have taken a number of measures.


The following events have been cancelled:  

  • All class assemblies, these will hopefully be rescheduled later in the year.
  • Parent’s evenings on 23rd and 24th March.

Assertive mentoring records will be sent home with your child, however if you wish to speak to your child’s teacher, a telephone appointment can be arranged. Teachers wishing to speak to parents about their child’s report will be contacted to arrange a telephone appointment.

  • Easter Service 31st March at St. Stephen’s.
  • Easter Bingo event on 2nd April, however we will still be selling raffle tickets on the playground from Wednesday 18th March for the Easter raffle prizes.
  • All extra-curricular clubs until further notice.
  • Meetings/visitors have been restricted to essential to education or the safe running of the school only.

The following provisions have been made in school:

  • No whole school assemblies.
  • No carpet time in classrooms.
  • Staggered lunchtime to limit the number of children in the hall at any one time and the playground zoned.
  • Water bottles to be sent home daily. Please wash thoroughly and refill each day.   
  • End of year trips will not be booked
  • Chilling club have introduced their own measures to limit the spread of infection.
  • Reduced shared resources
  • Increased hygiene and cleaning practices.


Children who develop symptoms during the school day will be sent home. Could parents please ensure that they are contactable should that situation arise.

For those families that are self-isolating there are homework and spelling information on the class pages of the website. In addition, Key Stage 2 have access to these websites - Timestable Rockstars, Accelerated Reader, My Maths and and there are various other information through Google Classroom on their Chromebooks.  If the school closes, you will receive further information and work available for your childs class, should this be necessary.


If the government stance changes and schools are closed, we have school business continuity plans in place. We will keep you informed of those plans at that time.
